OVERTON EXPECTED AT DRAFT

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — The draft is a few weeks out, which means former Commissioner James Overton is about to exist again.

He’ll arrive at 1:40. He’ll accept a beer he won’t open. He’ll speak to four people. He’ll be gone by the third round, and nobody will see him go, because nobody ever sees him go.

That’s the arrangement. Two hours a year, then twelve months of nothing. No group chat. No texts. No RSVP, in either direction, ever. He appears the way a comet does.

The resignation is the great unexamined event in league history. Overton ran this thing. In his final season he changed a rule in the final weeks. The current Commissioner objected. Loudly. At length. In writing.

Then Overton won the title.

He didn’t fight the objection. Didn’t explain. Didn’t defend the rule. He took the trophy, stepped down, and handed the office to the man who’d complained — which is either the most gracious exit in the history of neighborhood fantasy football or the single greatest act of trolling any of us has witnessed, and years on, nobody can say which.

Nobody will bring it up. Everybody will think about it.

He hasn’t been contacted. He won’t be. He’ll be there.
